Oulton Park Race Report
Updated: July 3, 2009
In terms of complexity and variety of corners Oulton Park has to rank as one of the most exhilerating circuit on the calendar, its rolling straights and sweeping curves are only matched by the beautiful surroundings in which this circuit is set.
After Michelin Cup rider Jamie Devines difficult Thruxton round he had some ground to make up at this his local circuit and first qualifying showed he had every intention of doing so as long as Lance Carey and Tommy Dale could be kept at bay. Reece Rothwell joined the hunt setting fourth fastest whilst Stephanie Waddelow followed very closely in fifth. Whilst all this was going on TDG Cup rider Duncan Knox stamped his intentions qualifying just behind Championship leader Rhalf Lo Turco by a hair splitting two tenths of a second, Allistair Haynes took up third position with Paul Hughes and Ricky Chadwick very close behind.
Race One & Devine took the hole shot in to the first corner with Rothwell & Carey in very close proximity, Rothwell then quickly pushed his way to first position before the end of lap one only to have the compliment returned before the lap could be completed. TDG Cup rider Duncan Know started his race right up with the front runners in fifth position but was quickly dispensed with by firstly Alex Olson and then his main rival Rhalf Lo Turco on lap four after a trip on to the grass at Old Hall. Jamie Devine continued to dominate all nine laps of this race whilst some serious battles commenced further down the field between Carey, Olson, Dale & Rothwell. Rothwell held his second position despite the attentions of Carey right up until the last mmoment when carey made a big push from his fourth position on lap four to take second position by the chequred flag. Tommy Dale also had a great ride after Olson retired on on lap six gifting a great fourth spot to this Michelin cup rider. Further down the pack the TDG boys battled on with Rhalf Lo Turco hunting down Duncan Knox and taking the lead on lap four whilst Allistir Haynes was pushed back by Stephanie Waddelow and then falling into the clutches of Paul Hughes. Once again the riders broke the lap record form last season by a massive 1.6 seconds, a stunning performance.
Race Two & once again Devine took the hole shot form lap one and continued to extend his lead through out the race to a massive 5.6 seconds, Alex Olson worked his way up to second place in spectacular style after an applling start from back in thirtenth place demotinging Rothwell to third after he had held that position for all but the last four laps. Tommy Dale and Lance Carey swapped positions on lap eight pushing the series leader to fifth position whilst he took the fourth leaving Rothwell to hang on to third. A good ride form o’Grady saw him take sixth after working his way up from tenth and Ben Miller came of age with a great ride to seventh position.
The TDG Cup boys lost the attentions of Duncan Knox on lap two after a tank slapper whilst Paul Hughes and Allistair Haynes battled for second & Third, come the chequred flag Haynes got the better of Hughes and Lo Turco took yey another win. Ricky Chadwick retired with engine problems.
A great weekends racing with some brilliant battles and riders whom until now have been trying to find their feet digging in and challenging for those top ten fininshes. Congratulations to all of them!

Louth in Lincolnshire played host to round two of the Triumph Triple Challenge and promised to give those that stamped their mark at Brands Hatch in round one the chance to show that beginners luck played no part.
Red bikes for the Michelin Cup riders and Black for the TDG Cup were only overshadowed by the grey clouds that intermittently turned the tarmac into a raging torrent of water, these difficult conditions made the debut for many a trial by fire.
Saturday morning and the rain eased giving the riders a drying track as 1st qualifying approached, tyre choice was difficult as cloudy and damp conditions persisted throughout their session. ”The Flying Welshman” set the fast time with round one race winner Alex Olson just 0.15 behind. TDG Cup runner Rhalf Lo Turco finished top of the tree with wildcard rider and 2008 series entrant Scott Rowbottom hot on his tail.
Conditions improved for 2nd qualifying as did the lap times with Reece Rothwell pushing his way up the top of the leader board whilst Jamie Devine and Alex Olson kept him on the boil.
Superpole race one and Reece Rothwell had claimed a pole position start with Jamie and Alex keeping him close company on the front row, Scott Rowbottom headed up the TDG Cup with Rhalf Lo Turco just over his shoulder. As the lights turned green Reece hoisted the front wheel of the Triumph only to find he had to back off the throttle allowing Alex and Jamie to claim the start, by the time they reached Coppice Jamie Devine had stamped his name on the lead. The first corner of lap one was to claim its first victim by way of Curtis Rothwell, who had to retire but only to lay a trap of mud and grass across Charlie’s to be negotiated on lap two. Fighting for the lead Alex Olson was to be claimed by the slippery surface on lap two at Charlie’s and his race was run, whilst Rhalf Lo Turco continued his dominance from Brands Hatch and leads the way for the TDG Cup riders.

As the race progressed Reece Rothwell took up the fight on behalf of the Rothwell clan and began closing down Jamie Devine, both riders broke away from the pack however this was to be a short lived challenge as the base of the mountain was to catch Reece out on lap four. By this time Scott Rowbottom, the series lap record holder for Cadwell Park, had dispensed with Rhalf Lo Turco and Lance Carey and paced himself up to second position. When the chequered flag dropped young Jamie Devine had claimed the win for the Michelin Cup runners with a commanding seven-second lead whilst Scott Rowbottom did the same for the TDG Cup runners. As always in this competitive series each round brings a new name to the fore and this round was no exception, a special mention goes out to Brett Carter, Stephanie Waddelow and Emmett O’Grady who all pushed their way into the top ten.

Race two on Sunday morning brought a mixed bag of weather conditions with riders making last minute changes to tyres, one victim of this Rhalf Lo Turco arrived late enough to be relegated to the back of the grid. As the hammer dropped Reece Rothwell again had a troubled start allowing Jamie Devine to claim the lead. With a drying track that still left a very wet surface in certain sections there was sure to be trouble ahead, first victims of this were Ricky Chadwick and Paul Hughes who both ended their race with falls at the same spot on the warm up lap! They were to be closely followed by Brett Carter, Tommy Dale, Curtis Rothwell and Rhalf Lo Turco.
Phillip Erwin made a great start moving through the field early on whilst Scott Rowbottom hunted down Jamie Devine to take the lead, however Jamie was undaunted and took the opportunity to follow the Cadwell Park specialist and learn just what made him so good. After 10 laps Scott Rowbottom took the chequered flag with young Jamie just 1.1 seconds behind followed by Phillip Erwin and Duncan Knox. A special mention goes out to Duncan Knox who took a gamble and ran the Michelin Power One intermediate tyres on the drying track, from 15th place on the grid he managed to push through the field averaging 2 seconds a lap faster than any other rider. The result was the fastest lap of 141.2 taking the number two spot for the TDG Cup runners.

Sunday afternoon and race three. Once again a rain soaked track greeted the riders and everyone had to feel their way round this undulating and twisty track. Not wanting to break his run of good luck once again Jamie Devine got the holeshot into Coppice with Scott Rowbottom in close proximity, in this shortened race Scott had pushed hard early on to slide under Jamie in lap three. The duo proceeded to break away from the pack dragging Phillip Erwin with them to keep guard in third place (second in the Michelin Cup).
Young Tommy Dale was to come of worst in a coming together and his race was run by lap three whilst his team mate Alex Olson kept shiny side up in 10th. Rhalf Lo Turco once again led the way for the TDG Cup runners with a confident Duncan Knox riding to yet another podium. Both the Rothwell’s finished well with Curtis breaking his bad luck with a top ten finish. Last but not least a special mention to Sean Noice who found some of his old form and pushed his way to just outside the top 15.

Round Three is in two weeks time at the Thruxton Circuit as a guest of the BSB Paddock.
Triumph Triple Challenge Round 1
Venue: Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.
From the cooling beginnings of a very wet Friday
practise the temperature was set to rise for the
remainder of the weekend; and rise it did in away
not yet seen in the previous two seasons of this
challenging series.
Young Welsh rider Jamie Devine opened the
bidding on Saturday mornings qualifying by
hustling his brand new Daytona around this undulating 1.2 mile circuit in under 51.00 seconds, enough
to take provisional pole for Saturday afternoons Superpole race and to give this very likable 19 year old
youngster confidence in his choice of racing this year. Already the riders were a little under one second
off last seasons lap record and many were still trying to find setup on the bike.
Friday saw TT rider Gary Johnson visit the riders on behalf of Nitron
Performance Shocks to distribute some wisdom on bike set-up as well as
overseeing Nitron’s launch of their 3-way competition shock as used
exclusively by T3 Racing and the series riders, his vast experience was a
big help for many when trying to bring together Nitron’s technology
and the awesome new Michelin Power 1 Tyres.
With another chance to make a point last years Michelin Cup rider
Lance Carey (23) made his mark on second qualifying by bringing
the lap times down to the low 50’s, this brought the lap record to
within half a second of his reach and set the stage for Saturdays
Superpole front row.
Superpole front row:
1. Lance Carey 2. Alex Olsen 3. Jamie Devine 4. Reece Rothwell (Michelin
Cup).
1. Rhalf Le Turco 2. Allistair Haynes 3. Ricky Chadwick (TDG Cup).
The time sheets went straight out of the window for Superpole as every
molecule of talent and determination was mustered to ensure no rider was
left in any doubt about who intended to make their mark in this feverishly
contested series. Lance Carey took the whole shot and showed the new guys
the way round, and show them he did as they learnt quickly and a five way
battle commenced with little less than a few feet separating each rider.
Fantastic racing ensued with the lead swapping no less than FIVE times over
the eight lap race. A brilliant advert for what one make racing is all about.
TDG CUP Pole position
Rhalf Le Turco
Lance Carey leads the pack into Clearways
The race finished with Lance losing his lead and experience advantage to Michelin Cup newcomer Alex
Olson, who also took the series lap record on his first outing with a blistering 49.712 lap record! Not to
be outdone Rhalf Le Turco stamped his mark for the TDG Cup boys with his first place finish closely
pursued by Allistair Haynes and Duncan Knox.
Final Results:
1. Alex Olsen 2. Lance Carey 3. Tommy Dale (Michelin Cup).
1. Rhalf Le Turco 2. Allistair Haynes 3. Duncan Knox (TDG Cup).
A perfect Sunday morning was only surpassed by some perfect racing, suspension and tyres were
playing a big part this weekend as the bikes being used were still 2008 models as per last year, any
performance gains had to becoming from those two areas. The
lights changed to green for Race 1 and the hammer dropped
with Lance Carey once again leading the way closely pursued by
Reece Rothwell and Alex Olson. Reece quickly took the lead
and commanded just long enough for 16 year old Alex to
dispense with Lance and start to snap at the heels of Reece.
Lap times dropped yet again as Alex smashed the series lap
record with a 49.52 followed by his team mate Tommy Dale
with a 49.7. Whilst the action was on the track the result was
to come from the tower when Alex picked up a 5 second
penalty for passing under a yellow flag into paddock demoting
him to third.
Final results:
1. Reece Rothwell 2. Lance Carey 3. Alex Olson (Michelin Cup).
1. Rhalf Le Turco 2. Allistair Haynes 3. Duncan Knox (TDG Cup).
Last race of the weekend and the final chance to score those vital Championship points was only going
to encourage the hungry. Whilst cooler conditions prevailed the track action stayed hot with two riders
staying under the previous lap record and Alex Olson crossing the line in a very commanding way.
Michelin Cup riders Jamie Devine and Reece Rothwell continued the good fight with an excellent battle
that resulted were left to battle it out in his wake.
Final results:
1. Alex Olsen 2. Jamie Devine 3. Reece Rothwell (Michelin Cup).
1. Rhalf Le Turco 2. Duncan Knox 3. Ricky Chadwick (TDG Cup).
A fantastic weekend for all the riders and a big thank you has to go out to
them for their stunning performances. Those bruised and those inflated
egos will now head off to Cadwell Park for May 16th-17th where no doubt it will
be ‘all change’.
